3-2-1 Liftoff
When Ryan’s MINI Adventure began, imaginations soared with all the journeys a little girl’s favorite toy could embark on. There were events to attend, people to meet, places to visit, and frontiers to explore. Dreams inspire and uplift, and the ultimate dream was to see Ryan’s MINI undertake a journey beyond Earth itself.
NASA Astronaut Leland Melvin, who has dedicated his career to educating children about space exploration and fostering an interest in science, engineering, and math, visited Ryan’s MINI Adventure at the invitation of Ryan’s cousin. Deeply moved by Ryan’s story, he made an incredible offer: to take Ryan’s MINI and spirit aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis - STS-129.
Every child deserves the chance to chase their dreams. They embody today’s joy and tomorrow’s promise. Ryan’s family takes great comfort and pride in knowing that, for one moment in time, Ryan soared to unimaginable heights, proving that “Little Girls Can Do Big Things!” Thank you, Astronaut Melvin!
Due to space limitations in Astronaut Melvin's personal storage box aboard the shuttle, Ryan's actual MINI had to remain on Earth, but it was beautifully represented by a photo.
Astronaut Melvin also brought along a photo of Ryan for the journey to space. Both the photo of Ryan’s MINI and the one of her were returned to the family as cherished mementos.
